For the second year in a row, we at MississaugaGives are bringing the GivingTuesday movement to Mississauga. This year, GivingTuesday takes place on Tuesday November 29, 2016.
Wait - but what exactly is MississaugaGives? What is a GivingTuesday? What’s the point?
Well, MississaugaGives is a non-profit organization recognized by the City of Mississauga. Last year, a group of driven millenials came together with one goal: to engage Mississaugans in giving back to their community, specifically by getting involved in the GivingTuesday Canada movement. And thus (after much hard work, dedication, sweat, tears, and smiles) MississaugaGives was born!
In 2015, 38 charities partnered with us to give back to the community. We had over 290 volunteers who donated over 1241 total hours to work towards the initiative. More than $33,500 was raised organically in financial donations, more than 682 pounds of food was collected, and more than 1200 clothing items were donated on GivingTuesday itself, not to mention all of the creative ways community organizations, schools, and businesses got involved.
In 2016, we hope to engage as many Mississauga citizens, community organizations, businesses, and schools as we possibly can to beat those numbers and ultimately to give back to our community.
So, what is GivingTuesday? GivingTuesday is the day after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two days great for the economy, where giving back to the community is encouraged as we kick off the holiday season in Mississauga. Organizations host charitable events like food drives, clothing drives, or anything creative they can think of. Citizens make financial donations, volunteer, donate gently used items, or give in any other charitable way of their choosing. The sky’s the limit!
Let’s celebrate GivingTuesday to give back to our community, to kick off the holiday season, to be part of a Canada-wide initiative, to connect with each other, and to see just how much we can make a difference.
We at MississaugaGives can’t wait to see what you do, so check our homepage or send us a line to see how you can get involved. Follow us on Twitter (@saugagives), Instagram (@saugagives), and Facebook (MississaugaGives) to stay in the loop!
